“Having followed Ellie in various online writing community, I already knew I loved her work and had no doubts that this would be the same – but this is so much better!
The world this story is set in is built so quickly and you immediately get a feel for who Anna Cane is, her backstory and her values. From the first conversation you get that she is a bad ass, driven young woman with the utmost respect for her absent father, and the bond she shares with him, despite the fact he’s barely around due to his work is so touching. And it’s something you are constantly reminded of as she interacts with the members of her team and talks with him on the phone, I really look forward to seeing more of Anna and Magnus (her father) in the next book.
The introduction to the team she works with & her boss happen quite quickly, which is great because it helps you as a reader keep learning about this new world Anna has found herself in and it helps establish the dynamics in the team. I adore Mitch, Brody & Tara and wish I could jump in on their puppy pile! They are all so caring and open it really helps Anna (and you) feel settled in their world.
Then we meet the mysterious Tobias Hilton, you instantly get that “bad boy” impression from your first meeting but there is just something there that makes you want to understand his outright hostility – and by the end of the book we’re starting to get a good idea.
Overall, I love this version of a paranormal world. Ellie has made it her own but for those who read paranormal books it feels very close to what we know already. Which I found helped endear me to the characters, their lives, their stories and the fine line they have to balance between our (very relatable) world and their totally unknown one.
I can’t recommend this book enough and am so looking forward to it’s sequel.”
